Kurdistan — A Cultural Overview

Understanding the geo-cultural homeland of the Kurdish people

What is Kurdistan?

Kurdistan refers to a geo-cultural region in the Middle East where Kurdish people form a significant or majority population. Spanning parts of modern-day Turkey (Bakur), Iraq (Bashur), Iran (Rojhilat), and Syria (Rojava), Kurdistan is not a sovereign state but a cultural and historical homeland.

Geography

The landscape of Kurdistan is defined by the Zagros and Taurus mountain ranges, the Tigris and Euphrates river systems, and vast plateaus. This geography has shaped Kurdish culture, architecture, and history for millennia.

Peoples

Kurdistan is home to diverse communities including Kurds, Assyrians, Armenians, Yazidis, Turkmen, and Arabs. This diversity is reflected in the region's monuments, which include mosques, churches, temples, and secular architecture.

Heritage at Risk

Many of Kurdistan's heritage sites face threats from conflict, neglect, dam construction, and urbanization. The Kurdish Heritage Platform documents these sites to ensure they are not forgotten.
